Hi.
Got a problem with my USB-Drive, I can't write anything in it nor format it, all this because it write-protected itself lol, since it doesn't have a write-protect switch nowhere!
Can't delete, there's no delete option on right-click!
Can't format:
Disk Management says it's healthy, but can't manipulate nothing with it:
Diskpart fails too, sends 'salute' to event log:
The little registry trick fails too:
Tried formatting it through 'Safe Mode with command prompt' failed too!
Tried many formatting tools and apps, some fail, some couldn't even detect it!
Tried it on my other Win XP, MAC, Linux, same...
Tried with some live cd-s fails too!

Any suggestion?!

Thanks.
P.S.: Contacted manufacturer, no reply yet, didn't find nothing related to it on their web-site.

  • A secure wipe basically performs a low-level format so that the entire disk is overwritten with 0’s. Other software will write junk data multiple times over the disk so that there is no trace of what was there before.
  • The HDD Low Level Format Tool is an application that does or at least comes close to doing this particular thing. The real Low Level Format is done in the factory, while tools such as this one.
  • Purchase a tool called SpinRite and condition the drive. This program can do a number of things including resetting the magnetic polarity of each bit on the hard drive, and mapping all dead sectors so that they are not used. It will basically give you the lowest level factory reset.

Time to buy a new disk. I have had the same thing happen. There was no resolution.

@Xhi: Thanks for your time, lol, i bought it this year, i think they should last more than 3 months and 5-6 times usage!

If you use FDISK, FORMAT utilities, or DELETE standard operating system command for data removal, there is always a chance to recover deleted files (using undelete or unformat tools) and use against the owner's will. Wipe your hard drive securely with Active@ KillDisk.

Thanks :)

You are correct and perhaps there is a warranty. The one that I had was relatively new as well.

I think XHi's Advice is BEST !!

The link below basically says the same thing Xhi suggests but read it anyway, especially the TIPS & Warnings at the bottom of the page.

Another possible solution:

Open the command line editor of windows. You find that under 'Start', then choose 'Run'. There you enter regedit.
Go to the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystem CurrentControlSetControl StorageDevicePolicies This is simply a folder within a folder and so on. The final folder, the one you are looking for is called StorageDevicePolicies, and as the name suggests contains the settings for how the storage devices (USB flash) should behave. Here you right click on: 'WriteProtect' and select 'modify'.
Here you set the value that appears to '0″. Press enter and that's it. (In other words: Default value: DWORD=0) Possible values are: 0 = Disabled, 1 = Enabled Set the value to 0 and you should be back in business.

@germ-x & raphoenix: Thank you, but it couldn't format it:

@Hermitt: Thanks. I tried that too, also contacted the manufacturer but I haven't got any reply yet, and in their web-site couldn't find anything that helps.
Your mentioned possible solution, didn't work(see my last picture on my first post)

Thanks.

Good Lord, I can't believe I didn't see that picture you posted showing the registry editor!! I must be blind. LOL

Jim :P

There is one other suggestion. If you have any bootable partition software try that delete the partition, if it lets you then make a new partition > then format the drive. This way your not in windows environment. If that doesn't work then wait for the mfg to contact you.

Have you tried booting your PC with a Linux Live-CD bootable disk (don't install Linux, just test drive it from the CD) and then use the system tools to format the USB drive.

I would download the most current Ubuntu flavor and create a bootable CD or DVD from the ISO you download. I keep a Linux bootable CD in my toolkit, has gotten me out of a lot of jams with Windows HDD's I had problems, even fixing MBR issues...

OK. folks, do we all realize that this is a 4GB flash drive worth about 6-bucks. Certainly not worth all this effort when even if it does get fixed it has a flaw which may create the problem again. I certainly would not trust it with any valuable data.

Throw it away! get a new one that is trustworthy. And... Keep a duplicate of that, too.

It's not a matter of bucks.

I think many of us are wondering if there's a Secret way that a Flash Drive can be protected which we don't know about.

I think we are trying to exhaust all possible known good software solutions so we can indeed determine the drive is physically damaged without a doubt for knowledge sake.

If the Drive were physically damaged, the message should be something like 'Drive Failure' or 'Unknown Failure' or 'Device Not Recognized' or 'Device Unknown', Etc,......

There should be NO picture in Disk Manager of a formated Flash Drive if the device is physically damaged ????

Rick P.

@Rick, You put that very well. Inquiring minds would like to know why something fails to operate as designed.

It's not damaged it's write protected. I have one. But, I haven't seen it for a while. If you want me to look for it I'd be glad to send it to you. But, I really think all this talent would be better used on something else.

@Xhi,

There's not much going on to answer so we're not taking up a lot time from other OPs.

Just Close the Topic if you think best.

NO issues.

Rick P.

Shkumbin, try this. In diskpart (in the picture posted above), after you 'select' the usb drive, type 'ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY' (no quotes) and hit enter. This should clear the 'read only' attribute of the usb drive. For more info on the command type HELP ATTRIBUTES DISK.

@All: Hi & thanks
@germ-x & ChuckB0612: I think I tried what you told me, I used 'GParted Live':

Thanks.

@raphoenix: Low level format, failed too:
Up, says that it wiped all data, but:

Low level format download

Thanks.

@Xhi: Seriously, it's not a matter of money. Simply I'm very interested to know what's going on, and what if the same happens with my 4TB HDD and all my data gets stuck in it, without the possibility to write on it, or wipe it all!!!

Thanks.

It happens. That is why backups are necessary on all devices, even backup devices. But, as I said I have been through this before and the only solution was to discard it.

For

Low Level Format

I AGREE with Xhi now.

Discard the Flash Drive !!!!

Kingston Low Level Format Tool

Post the Make and Model Number of the Flash Drive so others can AVOID the Product and the Manufacturer.

GREAT EFFORT Shkumbin !!!!

Rick P.

@Rick: glad you got a

Agree it was a GREAT EFFORT by Shkumbin!!!

@XHI: Thanks, well i think, there's nothing else I can do about, but I really really would like to now how did it came till here? What caused this? And the most important a possible solution?!
@RAPHOENIX: I have to agree with you all now :) Thanks.
The famous USB is: takeMS colorline(firm. 8.07)

This problem still remains a mystery! LOL
Thanks all.

PS: I also uploaded a video of the GParted Live, trying to delete, make new, format...partition.

Make and model may not even help others. It could be a counterfeit drive. Enough of those out there.

Products to AVOID.

Don't want to start a trade war here BUT good info to know.

Rick P.

@Shkumbin: I know how you feel. It was an unsolved mystery when it happened to me, too.
